I had disconnected and taken out the hybrid battery and after putting it back in and reconnecting it, the car would not go into either Reverse nor Drive.
I did a bunch of googling, and couldn't find the fix. The car drove fine before I took the hybrid battery out.....
The problem was the hybrid battery disconnect wasn't properly inserted by me. This is an orange plastic piece that goes in and locks in place. Well, I thought that I knew how to do it. Turns out, you have to slide it in and lock it and then press it down to make the connection. The pressing down was the step that I was missing....
So, to help get this information out there on google for the next dummy like me, I am adding this to my blog.
Here is a youtube video about what I am speaking. Fast forward to 1:00 to see the press down portion of the operation that I skipped.

Thanks man, You just saved me a bunch of time and money. That was exactly my problem.
ReplyDeleteNo problem. Glad it helped you out!

Hi All:
ReplyDeleteI encountered a similar problem with my 2008 Toyota Prius with ~72K miles. My Prius would not shift from neutral into drive nor reverse. I had my Prius towed to the nearest Toyota dealership. Initially they told me that the service technician that his tools could not communicate with the hybrid battery. Consequently, I approved them ordering the 2 following computer modules:

CONTROL MODULE - TOYOTA (89981-47212)
http://toyotaparts.bochtoyotasouth.com/oe-toyota/8989047092
89890-47092 - TOYOTA OEM PARTS - COMPUTER - TOYOTA
Once the parts arrived, the service technician opened up the hybrid battery area and discovered the hybrid battery connector was melted and burnt. I have the pictures.
Fortunately, they are able to return the computer modules. They are now exploring putting in a replacement hybrid. I have no details yet if they battery is new or refurbished. Given a choice, I will selected a new battery. I want to keep the car as long as possible. My dad taught me that.
My car has been unusable for 6 days. Fortunately, I have 2nd car I can drive.
I am planning for the worst, but hoping for the best.
Good luck to those with similar problems.
I have a 2008 Prius the car will not start and the shift gear indicator lights flash. 12v bat good. I drove car in puddle of water and hit pothole. Can anyone tell me what is wrong?
ReplyDeleteSame problem and stupid mistake (of not correctly re-installing orang disconnect)on my part for a 2008. I replaced the brake actuator, after putting it all back together, I used Techstream to bleed brakes. Then, could not get the car to go into Ready Mode. Sometimes it would shift into N but never D or R, sometimes would not shift out of P at all. Random codes were being thrown, Red triangle of death on instrument cluster and Red exclamation point on center screen. Banged my head against the wall for 2 days screwing with this. Finally found your post and pushed down on the hybrid battery orange disconnect to complete the proper re-install of the disconnect, disconnected the 12 volt battery for about 5 minutes, reconnected 12 volt battery and boom, everything works perfectly, didn't even have to clear any codes. Thank you so much for this post, I'm very grateful for your help. Let me know if I can buy you a beer somehow?
